Guest Wednesday Week 3 - Teck Cominco Recycling with Catherine and Christa!

For our third official Guest Wednesday of the summer, we welcomed Christa and Catherine from Teck Cominco! They came into the library to teach us all about recycling!

Of course, we also had a few early birds to the show, so I snagged a few pictures of them reading away, while waiting patiently for 2:30 to come around!

Catherine and Christa came into the library and talked to the kids about the importance of recycling and what we are able to recycle in our area.

We then played a game where the kids were able to put what they learnt to the test. Christa and Catherine brought in some examples of recyclables and non-recyclable products and garbage, the kids then had to sort out the goods into the right bins. The bins were labeled, "garbage", "metal", etc.

After that Catherine and Christa brought out another game! This one was a sort of matching game of sorts, where the kids had to organize some words/pictures into three categories, "metal" "product" and "uses" and for each metal the kids had to organize what product could be made from it, and what uses the product has.

After all that, Catherine and Christa brought in some awesome activity sheets themed around recycling! The kids had a go trying to find their way out of a maze and then had a big challenge with a metal themed word search (seriously, it was very difficult! [but very fun!!])

We all had a great time, I would like to again thank Catherine and Teck Cominco for participating again in our Summer Reading Club! And thank you to Christa for joining us this year!!! Thanks!

Guest Wednesday! - David DeRosa of Teck Cominco Ltd.: The Bugs of Beaver Creek

Guest Wednesday!
Look at the lovely audience!
Last week we had a great Guest Wednesday to add to the fantastic group of Guests we've had all summer! Last week's guest? David DeRosa from Cominco!

David is an avid bug finder and biology-nut! And today he shared with us some lovely samples of local creeks and marshes, in which some crazy critters were found!

David brought lots of tools and nick-nacks for the kids to explore the waters with! The kids loved it! We ewwwwwed and awwwwwed and macawed like cray-cray.... fish!

Here's some of our early birds going at 'er with some magnifying glasses and such!

Once we had all our Young Professors, Mad Scientists, guests and drop-in friends settled into the library and off exploring, we got everyone gathered and settled and David shared his adventures and travels into his field of study: bugs!

David spoke of the early spark of his interest in bugs as a kid bug-watching and net-building. He showed us some examples of the fantastic and easy-made nets that can be made at home with odds and ends. Dip one of these guys into some outdoor water source and get yourself a nice lovely bunch of bugs and such!

After his short presentation we were let lose again to explore the samples so generously brought in by David! Here's some pictures of that action!
