Superheroes Week 5 - Things with Wings!!!! A Batty Morning!

Whew! So for our 5th week of the Summer Reading club, the kids and I pre-celebrated our Guest Wednesday by doing a bat craft, in anticipation for our presentation from Juliet Craig of Kootenay Bats!

We had lots of fun reading/listening (audiobooks FTW) about BATman (ha! see what we did there!) and then watching some national geographic videos about bats!

Everyone also put lots of effort into making their bats, it was nice to see a plethora of variety, as later in the afternoon we learnt about the vast diversity among the different types of bats around the world! Fantastic stuff!

Sidekicks Week 4 - Send Me a Postcard!

Another week at the library, and we have a brand spanking new book display, courtesy of our ILL librarian Rhonda, who is super duper crafty! Check it out in the photo above! Themed around garden books and topped with a beautiful book diorama!!

Anyways, besides our beautiful decorations, we had some visits from the little Sidekicks!

This week the little ones made and decorated some postcards to send over the summer! They read some stores about travelling as well!

It was quite a lovely morning! Lots of the little Sidekicks came in with their Reading Record Logs and got some awesome stickers ad ballots into our weekly prize draw as a reward!!

Summer Reading Club - Commences! Sidekicks: Week 1 Things with Wings!

The Summer Reading Club kicked off to a start on July 9th with the Sidekicks meeting in the library for the first time this summer!

Miss Carly introduced the theme of "Things with Wings!" and the kids read some stories about flying animals, and my personal favourite - a momma and daddy bird that accidentally become parents of a crocodile who things he's a bird!

The craft was an adorable 3D dragonfly that the little ones each bejewelled and coloured in! The beautiful dragonflies were then glued onto some popsicle sticks, an voila!!! It was fantastic fun!

Sorry for the lack of photos! I was without camera for a few days at the library ... so some of these catch up posts will be low on photo quantity!!!

Adventure Picnic!

Monday we celebrated the summer and preschool programs of our area with the locals at the Beaver Valley Arena, which hosted our ADVENTURE PICNIC!

The event went very well, we had a variety of stations ripe with crafts, games and information for children and parents. We had a craft table and face painting table. A bouncy castle which was as usual very popular with the bunch!

We also had tables manned by different local organizations, including: the Columbia Basin Water Smart, Child Dental and Audiology, Sparks, Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL), CCRR and ATCO.

Here, Diana and Katie from the Columbia Basin Water Smart, are presenting to a group about where our local water sources are and where they come from and how we can preserve our water and not be "dragon drainers"!!

Here, Rebecca from ATCO Wood Products, presents to a group about trees and forestry and animal habitats! A great presentation that the kids really enjoyed!

Some good ol' fashioned parachuting in the parking lot.

Rhonda also was able to fit in some good ol' mother goose sing-a-long action for the kids, which was greatly appreciated by all!

And of course, our bouncy castle!!

... and more songs!!

A big thank you to all the people who attended this year! Also a big thanks to Beaver Valley Rec. for being such a big help! Thank you to all the groups and people involved in making the Picnic as fun as ever and I can tell ya now how excited we are at the library to get this event going for next year!!! ^_^

Update! Book Reviews for Masterminds and Adventure Picnic next week!

Bonjour my friends! This week has been a pretty chill week. I've been focusing on organizing the oncoming summer programming for the Superhero's (ages 6-9). And early in the week, on Tuesday, we had another splendid visit from another local kindergarten class. I got to take the kids on a tour of the library, while Carly gave some story and craft time for the kids to enjoy!

Today, I'll be working on planning out the rest of the summer reading club days for the Superhero's (ages 6-9) and Masterminds (ages 10-12)!!! I'm hoping to reiterate an idea from last year for the 10-12 aged kids with the return of Book Reviews!!! I think it's important to not just encourage kids to be reading, but to also get them to start to analyze and talk about the content of the stories they are reading! It's one of the best parts of reading - for me anyways!

Here's what we got for our Book Review Template:

Anyways, it's a very merry TGIF here at the library, cloudy morning with an oncoming hot afternoon according to the weather channel. I'll have to enjoy the fancy weather from inside - which is fine as I feel like I may have caught some sort of flu or nasty sickness -_- at least I'll have a weekend to recover!

Hopefully I'll be better for the awesome Adventure Picnic on Monday! I'm looking forward to the fun at the Beaver Valley Arena and BOUNCY CASTLE!!! woot! Here's a little snippet from our children's programming handout:

The Adventure Picnic was also mentioned in yesterdays newspaper, here's the scoop:

Week 7 - Scary Monsters!?!? AKA Cupcake Madness! with the Little Einsteins!

Mrs. Giles playing some silly monster games with the Little Einsteins and special Guest Spiderman!
So this Tuesday marked our last visit from the Little Einsteins for the Summer Reading Club! Rhonda went all out with the stories, crafts and snacks for this one! And wow! There were a lot of Little Einsteins for today! We had 19 kids and their parents/guardians join us in the morning, and what a lovely day it was!
Little Veronica roaming the shelves
Rhonda started things of choosing some classic songs from her usual repertoire of kids' songs! Then moved on to some games she had prepared that went along with our theme for the week!

After their singing and once the kids had settled into their seats once again Rhonda went on to read a couple of monster books to the kids!

It's so fun to watch Rhonda reading to the kids, the Little Einsteins totally soak it all in and Rhonda is so animated and fun!

One of the books she read through was a Sesame Street book from Grover called "The Monster at the End of this Book". This book is ridiculously hilarious! The first page starts with Mr. fuzzy Grover heeding a warning to the reader, and totally breaking the 4th wall, that their is a monster at the end of this book! :O And Grover warns you, don't turn the page! If you don't turn the page well, then you won't have to see the monster! Right?

Seriously I need an adult size version of that Spiderman hoodie, adorable!

But no no no, Rhonda turned the page, and AH! that definitely makes Grover very anxious and border-line mad!

It's hilarious and the kids loved it! Every page would end with NO! DON'T TURN THE PAGE!!!!! and Rhonda would ask, "Well, should we turn the page!?" to which the kids would all scream "YES!"

In desperation, Grover tried blocking the reader from turning the page, he ties string and even cement bricks the pages, but nothing can withhold the screams and commands of the Little Einsteins!

Week 6 - Dragons with the Little Einsteins!

Story time with Mrs. Giles! These kids are absolutely adorable!
So this Tuesday the Little Einsteins had lots of fun stretching their imaginations as the theme this week for the little ones was DRAGONS!!!!

Rhonda started things off as per usual with the Name Box and some classic songs!

For stories she read through some dragon books! She also read "Sophie and the Sea Monster" by Don Gillmor and illustrated by Michael Martchenko (known to me as the awesome guy who illustrates a lot of Robert Munsch books!

This is such a cute story and hearing Rhonda read it in such an animated and fun way was awesome! The kids enjoyed it immensely - as did I! It has become a favourite of mine this week, as I took it out to read to the Young Professors and Mad Scientists - who loved it just the same!

Along with that, Rhonda had set up her felt board and did a lovely rendition of 5 little monkeys, re-warped into 5 little dragons! The kids sand along and had a blast!
